Boulder Irish Session – Next Sunday at Conor’s CD
Now celebrating its 36th year, The Boulder Irish Session is a Boulder ‘institution’ and is still going strong. They are an informal, dynamic gathering of top-notch Front Range musicians who, until Covid, came together on Sunday evenings at License No. 1 in the Boulderado Hotel to share tunes and songs of the Celtic tradition. After the last 2 summers of outdoor sessions on Sunday evenings at Harlequin’s Gardens, beginning Sunday Oct. 3rd, BIS is trying out a new indoor venue. We’ll update you soon!
Over the years, the Session has gained many loyal followers who know they will always hear some of the best, most spirited live traditional Irish and Celtic music in the region on any given Sunday. Harlequin’s Gardens co-owner Eve Brawner is one of the founding members of the Boulder Irish Session and is still a ‘regular’ there, playing English concertina, and singing. We offer both of their excellent CDs, Sunday at Conor’s and the sequel, Next Sunday at Conor’s.
“ON MY WAY HOME” and other stories by Mikl Brawner – New!
If you have met and spoken with our founder and guiding force, Mikl Brawner, then you know that he is, to say the least, an interesting man who has led an interesting life. He is also a gifted storyteller and writer and has at last begun to recount his adventures and observations on paper.
These stories are from true experiences in Mikl’s life. They start at the end of his 2-years of work in the Peace Corps in India, with a trip to Katmandu, Nepal. From there, Mikl chronicles his adventures travelling solo overland from India in 1971 through Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey, Munich, and London, and has added a bonus of a few other stories. It’s a page-turner. Read a paragraph and see.
Profits from the sale of his book will be donated to our Staff Prosperity Fund.
Brus L. Westby, “Letters Home: Lessons from the Great Hippie Trail” – New!
Are you an Old Hippie? Are your parents? If so, this book is for you, or for them! Our friends Brus and Jean Westby travelled the “Great Hippie Trail” back in 1970, at a time in America marked by the Vietnam War, social unrest and change, a proliferation of psychedelic drugs, and a quest for a meaningful spiritual path. After college, the young couple travel overland through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, bound for ‘Mother India’ and compelled by a desire to explore a world different than their own, a world of mystery, challenge and discovery. In this recounting of their eventful journey, Brus weaves together the reassuring letters they wrote home to their families and the more accurate and compete account of their adventures and lessons learned along the way.
Butterflies of the Colorado Front Range
Nearly everyone loves butterflies! We watch them because they’re exquisitely beautiful, but they also have magical life cycles and intricate relationships among their host ecosystems. Are you overwhelmed by the array of possibilities in field guides that cover a broad geographic range?
This expanded second edition is a user-friendly book focusing on 100 frequently seen species in the Colorado Front Range. Easily identify butterflies using over 120 striking color photos of individuals in their natural setting, and clear descriptions of both males and females. Each entry also includes that species’ habitat and life cycle, the caterpillar’s host plants, and look-alike butterflies. The introduction includes tips on where to find butterflies, how to get close to them, and what we can do to attract them to our gardens and preserve their sensitive habitats. Belongs in every Colorado hiker’s backpack or back pocket!
Amber Lights Beeswax Candles
Our friend Clark has turned what used to be a family hobby into a full-time business. In his Longmont studio, he makes delightful cast beeswax candles that come in a wonderful variety of shapes and sizes, including several designs that are cast in traditional European holiday season candle molds. This year, we are also offering Amber Lights hand-dipped beeswax taper candles and Shabbat candles.
Amber Lights candles are highly decorative, wonderfully detailed, naturally endowed with a heavenly honey scent, and burn clean and smokeless.
Hanukkah begins Thursday, December 7th. A set of dripless, smokeless, hand-dipped beeswax candles from Amber Lights contains all the candles you’ll need to light the Menorah through the entire 8-day holiday. And they smell wonderful! And they come in a lovely blue mesh bag. And they are Local. And if you have no use for Hanukkah candles, we have everything from birthday candles to 6″ pillars, bee-skeps to Buddha heads, Deco to dragons, reindeer to roses, all beautifully crafted from our friend Clark at Amber Lights.
Baxter & Jones Aprons
Their name may lead you to believe that they are a law firm or financial advisor. But to the contrary, Dana Jones and Amy Baxter are two Niwot moms who began sewing face masks at the onset of the pandemic and found they enjoyed working with fabric so much that they kept going, making charming, retro-styled aprons (for grown-ups and kids), as well as table linens. Amy and Dana use soft, 100% cotton and source their accent fabrics from local independent shops.
The Crevice Garden
Crevice Gardens Rock!
The Crevice Garden: How to make the perfect home for plants from rocky places was in the making for 5 years, a project undertaken by two young rising stars of horticulture in the west. Kenton Seth lives and works in the Grand Junction area and Paul Spriggs in Victoria, B.C. Both have studied the craft extensively and experimented, designed, built, planted and maintained crevice gardens large and small, public and private, in dry conditions and wet, using all kinds of stone and various planting mediums.

Dr. Brawner’s Healing Aftershave – Harlequin’s Exclusive!
Formulated and made in Boulder by ‘the doctor’ himself (our founder, Mikl Brawner), from 99% pure Aloe Vera Gel, with cold-pressed, organic Rosehip Seed Oil; 100% pure Jojoba Oil, and 32,000 IU Vitamin E Oil, along with essential oils of Lavender, Vetiver, and Rose. That’s all. No alcohol, nothing synthetic, non-greasy. All the ingredients are natural plant products, chosen for their skin-healing qualities. The steam-distilled Rose Oil is a powerful anti-viral and antiseptic. The other ingredients are good for healing burns and dry and damaged skin, inflammation, wrinkles. They are moisturizing and uplifting to the spirits.
Mikl has made and used this formula for more than 18 years to heal his Irish skin from the abrasion of shaving and the drying effects of the Colorado sun (and keep him looking youthful and handsome!). And it smells wonderful, and it’s not just for men!
Anellabees Honey Candy and Caramels
Eve found Ft. Collins based Anellabees honey candies and fell in love with the innovative and delicious candies and the people behind them. Anellabees was inspired by a curious little beekeeper, Anella (who has helped with the family’s beehives since the age of two!), and her mother’s passion to create a honey-based candy with quality ingredients. Their candies originated in Fort Collins as a mother-daughter passion project in 2017, when Danielle and Anella began testing hard candy recipes in their kitchen using an old confectionery press from the 1880s. The goal was to create a honey-based candy that everyone in the family would love, free of the unnecessary, unhealthy ingredients, like high-fructose corn syrup, soy, gluten, preservatives, and artificial flavors, found in most confections. Their honey is sourced from beekeepers in the U.S. and all additional ingredients – spices, butter, and dairy, are organic and rbGH-free.
Anellabees gives back by donating a portion of their sales to organizations like PPAN, CO Farm & Food Alliance, and World Bee Project who are doing the essential work of protecting our planet, people, and pollinators.

Their name may lead you to believe that they are a law firm or financial advisor. But to the contrary, Dana Jones and Amy Baxter are two Niwot moms who began sewing face masks at the onset of the pandemic and found they enjoyed working with fabric so much that they kept going, making charming, retro-styled all-cotton aprons (for grown-ups and kids), tea towels, placemats, napkins and new tote bags. Amy and Dana use soft, absorbent cotton flour-sack material for their casual towels and tableware, and source their accent fabrics from local independent shops.

This kit has everything you need to color in some fun barn animal postcards using watercolor! Watercolor allows you to blend and customize the color you want on the paper more easily than markers, crayons, and coloring pencils. The kit includes 5 postcards, a palette of 6 watercolors, and a free water brush pen. Amanda has hand-made her own luscious watercolor paints from locally collected plant materials!
Diane’s Temari – Harlequin’s Exclusive
Our customer and friend Diane Patterson makes these wonderful ornaments, called Temari, which date back to ancient Japan, where Temari was originally a handcraft of upper class women. Intricate designs were embroidered on handmade balls using silk threads from kimonos. The balls were used as toys.
Temari are unique, beautiful, colorful gifts. Attractive hanging as a single ornament, grouped in a bowl, used in a centerpiece, given as a housewarming gift, or simply to hold and admire, they will be treasured for many years.
Elyse Steinman Pottery – New!
Elyse is part of a new generation of potters putting a modern twist on a centuries-old decorative technique called sgraffito, an Italian word meaning “to scratch” which was especially prominent in Italian Renaissance architectural plaster work as well as African and Southwestern American Indian pottery.
We were delighted to meet Elyse at an Art Walk event in Longmont. Elyse’s work is bold, modern, and geometric, using black slip over white clay, and will fit into any modern or eclectic setting. Each striking piece is expertly handmade and one-of-a-kind.
Seeds from Botanical Interests
Botanical Interests goes to great lengths to provide all the information you need, and more (like an illustration of what the seedling looks like when it emerges), on both the outside and the inside of the packet, plus stunning, botanically accurate illustrations by highly skilled local artists adorning the front of each packet! We have carefully selected varieties from their catalog that will thrive in Colorado’s short season, early heat, cool nights, etc.
Enjoy them in your own garden and share them with a friend.
Erin Huybrechts Davis Art (Green Meadow)
Erin Huybrechts Davis says she has been a painter for as long as she can remember. She grew up on the east coast, has her degree in painting and printmaking, and a masters degree in education. She now lives here in Longmont, CO, where she is a freelance illustrator and teaches art to young people.
We were struck by her flowing, stylized and poetic depictions of the natural world. She is inspired by patterns and imagery from Asia, where she has traveled, and this influence is evident in her work as well. We are delighted to offer Erin’s cards, prints, and original paintings again this year!
Indigo Blues Hand-dyed Table Linens & Garments
Eve’s friend Sue Hagedorn is a Longmont fiber artist. She has brought us an assortment of beautiful indigo-dyed napkins, table linens, scarves and fabulous dyed recycled clothing.
An Anchorage, AK native, she became interested in indigo dyeing at a workshop there and was drawn to its healing and quiet contemplative properties. She has explored the traditional Japanese art of Shibori (a method of folding and tying to produce dye-resist patterns), and dyeing with a variety of natural materials on natural fiber fabrics, table linens, clothing and paper of all kinds. Sue also teaches indigo dye workshops outdoors during the warm months.
Kathleen Lanzoni Art Cards and Prints
Our amazingly gifted friend Kathleen Lanzoni is an acclaimed watercolor painter and an award-winning signature member of the Colorado Watercolor Society, the Western Colorado Watercolor Society, the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Society and the Western Federation of

Julie Neri Pottery
Years ago, Julie and Eve were classmates at the Boulder Potters Guild. Julie’s passion for clay subsequently led her to create her own home studio in Longmont, where she applies her hand-building skills and sense of whimsy to making delightful decorative and functional pieces.
Now a Guild member and a teacher there, Julie says “I am drawn to texture and find my roots coming through in my work. I am inspired by nature and by the patterns of repetition: the simplicity of a house, the design formed by bicycle gears, the delicate texture in a leaf, the rolling rocks in a rambling stone wall, and the ridges on a sea turtle’s shell.”
This year, Julie will bring us her holiday ornaments, eyeglass stands, mats, and cloth rope-coiled bowls.

Lili Christensen Handspun Yarn – New!
A fiber and fabric lover from her earliest years, Lili learned to knit from her mother when she was eleven, and went on to study painting, printmaking and fashion design. She learned to spin at age 24, and so began a life-long passion. Lili begins each morning with a contemplative hour at her spinning wheel.
Her love of color and pattern and a fascination with the unique qualities of wool from different breeds of sheep keep her spinning! No two skeins are ever alike, and each awaits someone making something special from them. Lili provides the story behind each skein and recommendations for the best knitting patterns to show them off. Use a one-of-a-kind skein to make a very special gift or gift the yarn to a needle-crafter who will delight in its beauty and its story.
LoveLevel Jewelry – New!
We are delighted to introduce this local maker of earrings to our Holiday Market! Pebble Art Jewelry
Eve discovered Pebble Art Jewelry when she was lured into their little shop by an arresting display of jewelry made from ancient Roman glass. This year Kate Head has again brought us wonderful pieces featuring fragments of 1200 year old Roman era glass from the Mediterranean region in gorgeous shades of blues, greens and iridescent pearl combined with modern styling, and at very reasonable prices.
She has also brought a variety of lovely and affordable earrings, bracelets and necklaces featuring with semi-precious natural stones and pearls. Pebble is located at 7980 Niwot Road next door to the Niwot Market.
Gelsey Malferrari – Willow Baskets and Platters – New!
Gelsomina (Gelsey) Malferrari grew up in Boulder and Italy, daughter to artisan parents. She encountered willow basketry in the canyons of southern Utah over ten years ago, which started a passion for the craft that has grown ever since. She harvests most of her materials in the winter around Boulder County, sorting and curing them for summer time weaving. Crafting beautiful, strong baskets from willow requires skill, strength and patience, and willow baskets can last a lifetime, or longer.
Gelsomina lives on a 20 acre homestead with her husband and two children. She is also one of the founders of the Laughing Coyote Project, a non-profit dedicated to teaching primitive and ancestral living skills. She teaches workshops through Laughing Coyote and Dharma’s Garden.
Linda Toomre Fiber Arts
Linda loves color! And she loves the creative process of making things from yarn or cloth. She started out in fiber arts as a weaver, but expanded into other forms as well, and is now also an accomplished quilter. This is her second year making items for our Holiday Gift Market, and has brought her popular heat-insulated quilted cotton potholders, along with her new placemats.
Linda has been an active member and past president of the Handweaver’s Guild of Boulder for many years, with galleries throughout Colorado showing her work.
Lynn Mattingly Quilts
Our dear friend Lynn Mattingly is a renowned fiber artist and has been practicing and teaching quilting for decades. An exceptional sense of color-combining, a fabulous collection of fabrics and a mastery of design and craftsmanship combine to make Lynn’s work really special. Sturdy and machine-washable, they are not only gorgeous but also practical.
This year we offer her Small Quilts and Table-Runners. Lynn lives just over the hills in Paonia, CO.
Kisu Lip Balm – Harlequin’s Exclusive!
Created by Pamela Clum’s Plum Botanicals, a small fair-trade organic skin-care line based here in Boulder Valley. This long-lasting lip balm is based on wild-collected African shea butter from a women’s cooperative, and lightly scented with the marvelous, unique, citrus-y essential oil of neroli.
Shea butter is a natural sun-blocker, so it really helps prevent chapping in all seasons. Kisu is still, by far, Eve’s favorite lip balm!
Peter Buwalda Fine Art
Living outside of Boulder and inspired by the great beauty of Colorado and its diverse landscapes, accomplished painter Peter Buwalda’s depictions of trees, flowers and pollinators go beyond simple documentation. Peter composes complex imagery that uses nature to evoke emotional responses such as hope and perseverance while maintaining accuracy. His art is collected worldwide and is quickly gaining acclaim in the Rocky Mountain area. Many of his honeybee images are on permanent exhibit in the National Agriculture Museum in Ottawa, Canada. Peter offers fine art greeting cards and original paintings, and may still have some prints available.
Renee’s Glass
Artisan Renée McDougall of Longmont became interested in crafting with glass while working at the Stained Glass Supply Company. She works mostly in fused glass, a process that can take up to 11 hours from start to finish. Renée uses her home studio for crafting many different glass pieces, from jewelry to bowls, trays and hanging art.
We think her cast glass hanging Green Man will make a lovely addition to any gardener’s window or porch! And this year, she’s added a female wood-spirit face to join him.
Sustainable Threads – New!
Sustainable Threads is an exclusively fair trade, eco-focused company promoting handmade lifestyle products, carefully co-designed with their artisan partners in India and assuring them a living wage from their craft. Traditional art techniques are used to craft a collection with a modern sensibility.
Their kitchen towels are hand block-printed with non-toxic dyes on heavy weight, highly absorbent Kora unbleached/unprocessed cotton fabric. The geometric patterns are as perfect for modern minimalist settings as they are for traditional and eclectic kitchens. We are also carrying their handwoven, indigo-dyed placemats.

Rejuvenated Remnants
Joan Hemm began working with the fabrics found in thrift-store draperies, duvet covers, tablecloths, and sheets in high school where there was no budget for costumes for the drama department’s productions. We first met Joan at a Boulder County Farmer’s Market, where she was dressed in a wonderful period costume portraying Susan B. Anthony in honor of Women’s Suffrage, and armed with voter registration forms. She had, of course, made her costume from remnants.
Fashioned from top quality ‘designer’ home decor fabric remnants (small new, unused leftovers), Joan reimagines the fabrics into one-of-a kind crossbody bags for us. She designed her pattern based on features she personally wanted: a “gusset” to create a roomier interior, a pocket on the back for a cell phone, inside pockets, cotton linings, and an adjustable strap. Just what we all wanted! And this year she has made laptop carrying bags, too!
Trek Light Gear
Trek Light Gear Fanny Packs & Bindle Daypacks
Boulder-based Trek Light makes excellent recreational gear, and partners with a global tree-planting NGO to plant a tree for every product sold.
A great new product is their 100% water resistant, perfect-sized Fanny Pack that easily converts from hip pack to crossbody shoulder sling, worn on your front or back, and adjusts easily to fit adults of most sizes. Constructed with 4 zippered compartments, multiple pocket organizers, and even a hidden key clip, it comes in two fabric patterns to choose from. The wide, soft webbing strap and quilted back assure your comfort.
The Bindle Pack returns! From pocket-sized to perfect-sized, this awesome daypack can go everywhere with you. Stored in its attached tiny stuff-sack, it can ride in your glove compartment, bicycle pack, pocket or backpack and come out to play for any impromptu or planned day hike, shopping trip or festival. You get hands-free comfort, adjustable straps, amazing capacity, easy care, tremendous strength and durability (made of parachute nylon). Eve has been using hers for 10 years and doesn’t go anywhere without it!
Traditional Majolica Ceramics
Our friends Thea Tenenbaum and Raffaele Malferrari have for many years been well known around Boulder and beyond for their charming tradition-based Italian majolica pottery. Since Thea’s sad passing, Raffaele and their daughter Gelsey have been working together in the studio to continue the family’s tradition.
Majolica is a process requiring multiple firings and great skill with the paintbrush. Their exquisitely detailed mugs depicting local animals, birds and insects, and tradition-inspired abstract designs will be treasured by anyone lucky enough to receive them!
Wax Crescent Candles
Our scented and poured candles are from Longmont resident Kym Terribile, who started making candles when she found out that the candles she was burning were full of toxic chemicals.
Wax Crescent candles are made with pure ingredients: US-grown soy wax, scented with phthalate-free fragrance oils and high-quality essential oils, and the wicks are lead-free, zinc-free cotton. The recyclable glass jars are adorned with simple, attractive labels. If lighting a candle signifies creating a sacred space for yourself, why would you settle for less?
We’ve chosen six of Wax Crescent’s unique natural fragrances we prefer for the autumn and winter months: Black Fig & Bergamot, Rosemary & Cedar, Lavender & Rosemary, White Birch & Eucalyptus, Matcha & Lemongrass, and Vetiver & Fig.
Zink Metal Art
Zink Metal Art is the collaborative effort of Charlotte and Ben Zink, who have made their whimsical and flowing designs of metal for home and garden for the past 20+ years in Berthoud, CO.
Their steel garden sculptures are graceful, original, very easy to install, and affordable, and similar designs are available as smaller garden ornaments, indoor wall-pieces and as holiday tree ornaments. All make great gifts!

We believe this is the very best chocolate produced in Colorado.
We are offering their superlative chocolate bars from several single-origin sources, their innovative mixed flavor bars, as well as their delicious Mexican style Sipping Chocolate, Taxcalate heirloom Atole mix, and Café de Olla, a delicious traditional spiced Mexican coffee/chocolate brew.
