People are usually first drawn to Harlequin’s Gardens for our outstanding array of locally adapted plants sustainably cared for, and then discover our Garden Center Shop and Bee Barn. For the Holiday Market we’ve selected some of our favorite garden and bee-focused gift ideas such as durable and attractive garden gloves, beautiful bulbs, and our personal favorite (and always the right size!) Harlequin’s Gift Certificates – not to mention a selection of gifts for the beekeeper in your life who keeps you in sweet honey.
One of the earliest harbingers of spring are flowering bulbs, which people and bees all seem to welcome. One aspect of bulbs that may be underrated is their scent. Many bulbs are fragrant, bringing an added dimension to their enjoyment. Some of our most fragrant bulbs include:
- All Hyacinth varieties
- Iris reticulata Blue Hill, Carolina, and Harmony
- Lycoris squamigera
October 2020 went from record high temperatures in the 80s to record lows, 19 degrees by October 25. May 2021 also made some shocking temperature changes. These rapid and dramatic changes can cause woody plants to die back, lose branches or die completely.
Mikl has been waiting and waiting before pruning this spring, because sometimes our woody plants can leaf out very late. Here is a way to tell when to prune:
Harlequin’s Gardens has been growing (pun intended!) and needs more space for garden products. So, we have decided to close our bee-keeping supply business, affectionately known as the “Bee Barn”. We are sorry to discontinue this service to the bees and to our local beekeepers, but the Bee Barn has not been profitable, and we need the space for our nursery products. On the bright side, this means that starting this week, ALL the bee equipment will be sold at 40% off.
We know it’s not necessarily easy to access the ‘Holiday Spirit’ this early in the season, especially in the midst of local wildfires and a pandemic. These emergencies have separated us from each other, but in meaningful ways, they have also brought us together. Here at Harlequin’s Gardens and beyond, we have seen a real increase in mindfulness and caring for others.
Your bees have given you joy and honey (hopefully!) this summer. Now it’s time to give back to ensure they have a safe and cozy winter. They need three things:
Your hive needs healthy bees to raise the bees that go through winter. Keep monitoring your varroa mite levels through the end of October. As uncared for hives collapse, your bees will rob their honey and bring back more mites. Your bees need to be free not only of damaging mites, but also of the viruses they carry.
Harlequin’s Gardens love and support for bees is reflected in our Bee Barn’s great selection of bee keeping products, many of which are locally sourced. We feature 8 and 10 frame Langstroth hive equipment (both assembled and unassembled), real beeswax foundation, and an amazing selection of tools and accessories, protective gear, feeding and bee health supplies, and great books.
We’re here to support our native bees too! We also offer supplies for cultivating our native hole-nesting bees, including mason bees and leaf cutter bees. Unlike many other advertised native bee nest boxes, ours are correctly proportioned for successful nesting. These make great gifts for those who aren’t up for the commitment of honey bee keeping and want to work with native species. Stay tuned for our spring-time classes to learn more.
Whether you’re a new or continuing beekeeper, our staff beekeepers can answer questions and give advice – something you can’t get from mail order! We have Beekeepers Shopping Lists for Beginners, Seasonal, and Holiday Gift Giving to help guide your selections. Kristina Williams, our own local bee expert, will be on hand on Friday’s and Sunday’s to help tailor your bee-gifting.
BBB is a great local seed company, offering Rocky Mountain wildflower mixes, and flower seed mixes for supporting honey bees and wild bees and other seed mixes that are perfect for gifts or holiday party favors.

“This is the best all-around tool ever! Whenever I go out into the garden with no particular task in mind (other than peace of mind putzing) I grab this tool. It can dig, saw into fat roots, slice into bindweed roots with the pointed tip, it’s wonderful. I have a sheath for it which slides nicely onto a regular belt or garden-tool belt. I love using it for planting bulbs as I can make a deep, small hole. If I could only have one tool forever, I would choose this one.”

Catch wasps, bees, moths, flies, spiders, beetles, and even earwigs one-handed, swiftly, easily, without hurting them. Then observe them closely through the clear container, before releasing them outside.
This is the German-made Schutzgreifer that we have been searching for. They operate one handed like scissors: simply open, place over the insect, and gently close. Even works on drapes and upholstery.
As far as we know, we are the only source for this tool in the whole of the United States!
This very small, extremely high quality 12x power magnifier is great for getting a closer look at what’s bugging your plants, taking out splinters, or helping to identify flowers.
We love West County gloves! They are made from recycled plastic bottles, are very durable and stand-up to several seasons of tough gardening. They are machine washable and retain their shape, and they come in great colors and patterns! We carry their Work Glove, Rose Gauntlet, Mud Glove and Grip Glove, all in a range of sizes.
If you give these gloves as a gift, be assured that the recipient is welcome to exchange them for a different in-stock size, as long as they are still unused and in their original packaging.
