Planting time is upon us! We still have great seed potatoes but they’re selling fast! The same goes for asparagus crowns and onion plant bundles. And oh my, do we have spring vegetable starts! Robust lettuce (7 varieties!), Pak Choi, Baby Pak Choi, Tatsoi, both Nutribud and Umpqua broccoli, 3 varieties of cabbage, 3 of Swiss Chard, 5 kale varieties, plus escarole, collard greens, arugula, cilantro and bulbing fennel, with radicchio and others coming later this week! ONIONS:
Red Zeppelin F1 hybrid red onion known for its large, firm, globe-shaped bulbs, dark red color, and exceptional storage life of 6-8 months. Suited for northern climates, these onions are slightly pungent and ideal for fresh eating, salads, and cooking, with a 100-110 days to mature.
The old timers say that when the dandelions are blooming – that’s the sign to start planting potatoes. Now is a great time to plant!
POTATOES:
Nicola– Early. Thin skinned, yellow inside and out. Nutty flavor, good for boiling or roasting.
Harvest Moon– Early. Round tuber with purple skin and deep yellow flesh. Firm texture after cooking, with a nutty taste. Good for roasting, baking, soups, and chips. Stores very well.
Carla Rosa– Early. Red skin, yellow flesh. Pleasing firm moist texture. Have them on the table before summer peaks!
Purple Majesty– Midseason. Uniform, high-yield, deep purple skin and flesh, very high in anthocyanins (high-potency antioxidant) Bred in & for Colorado.
Sangre– Midseason. Red skinned variety with shallow eyes and medium-sized oblong tubers. Ranks high in taste tests with creamy white flesh that is especially delicious boiled or baked. Stores well.
ASPARAGUS:
Jersey Knight – All-male hybrid with bigger spears. Does not make seed, so doesn’t become weedy. Best selection for dense clay soils. Very productive and disease-resistant. Cold-hardy to Zone 2. 5 crowns per bag.
