The Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes an annual ‘Dirty Dozen’ report on toxic residue on non-organic produce, and in the 2024 report PEARS are called out as among the most dangerous to eat. 95% of pears had pesticide residues, and more than 6 of 10 non-organic pears tested by the Department of Agriculture have traces of five or more pesticides, a dramatic jump from earlier tests.
At Harlequin’s Gardens we grow plants naturally, without pesticides and chemical fertilizers that are made from petroleum and pollute our ground water, streams and oceans. Harlequin’s Gardens specializes in organic fertilizers and pest management supplies. Our nursery has grown plants organically since 1992.
That includes our fruit trees. Why not add a few to your home garden and be assured of toxin-free fruit?

Tyson
A highly regarded heirloom pear dating back to 1794, said to be “second only to Seckel”, with creamy, non-gritty, sweet, juicy, aromatic flesh. Deep yellow teardrop fruits have some russeting. Similar to the treasured winter pear, Comice, but ripening months earlier, in early September. Fireblight-resistant and cold-hardy to Zone 4, 100 year old trees continue to bear fruit in Maine. Not self-fertile, requires a pollinizer.
