WINTER SOLSTICE GREETINGS!
Winter Solstice, the day when we in the Northern hemisphere experience the shortest day and longest night of the year, falls on Saturday, December 21st. After that, the tilt of the earth will reverse direction, lighting the path to Spring north of the Equator. And because Spring is coming, once again, I’ve got seeds, my favorite subject!, on my mind, on my desk (dining table), in bags and boxes all around the room, and seed order invoices are crowding my inbox.
At the nursery, we have lots of native seeds in cold-stratification in our refrigerators, simulating the natural conditions the seeds would undergo in the ground during winter, triggering their germination after a period of time. And we already have seedlings growing in our greenhouses.
Last night, Mikl and I watched a film called SEED: the Untold Story, that we somehow missed 10 years ago, when it was new. It’s a great reminder of all the ways that seeds are basic to life on earth, the wellbeing of the human race and other creatures, and of their sacredness, recognized by cultures around the world since time immemorial. The film also discusses the threats to seeds, how the threats originated and became the dominant forces in agriculture world-wide, the dangers we face, and what we can do to protect our seed legacy. When we hold a seed in our hand, we hold a miracle, a spark of life. Just add water, sun, and soil or rock, also sacred elements, and you have the foundations of our living planet. I believe that most of the world’s biggest problems could be corrected or eliminated if this understanding, integral to indigenous cultures everywhere, informed our actions.
We know that many of you are already planning your gardens for this year. To add to your gardening success, we are assembling a schedule of classes, beginning in January, and a plethora of seeds and seed-starting products, also scheduled to arrive in January. We already have a large assortment of seeds for sale from Botanical Interests that are packaged for 2025! And then there will be all those plants!
We hope the return of light will cheer you up and help you enjoy the holiday season!
