Update: Our GoFundMe appeal has brought in important support for Harlequin’s Gardens, and we deeply appreciate your generosity. We are a little over half-way to our goal of $35,000. We are working to make this a successful year in spite of challenges. Harlequin’s Gardens is not just a store; we are a lot like a farm. We grow thousands of plants with challenges of supply, heat, cold, drought and wind, not to mention rising costs. And like a farm, we are a seasonal business: we make money four months of the year, we break even for three months and our expenses are higher than our income five months of the year. During that time we hold our Holiday Market and do critical propagation work, repairs and upgrades, planning and ordering.
In spring, when our parking lot is full and customers have to park on the road, they assume we must be doing really well. If we could break even in the winter months we would not be begging for contributions. 2026 is a make-or-break year for us. If we couldjust attract 10%-20% more customers, we could be sustainable. So please tell your friends and neighbors about us. Please share hare our newsletters and please send our
GoFundMe link to people who would like Harlequin’s Gardens to continue as community resource. Many small contributions will add up.
We will celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day on Saturday April 25. There will be details in next week’s newsletter. On May Day (Friday, May 1 st ) we will interrupt our business to join in the General Strike: No Work, No School, No Shopping. We will join workers around the country to protest: War without Congressional approval, attacks on our voting rights and human rights and immigrant rights; removal of protections of our clean air and water and endangered species, elimination of important services, disregard for our guaranteed Separation of Powers; and in general disrespect for Our Constitution. We will be CLOSED all day May 1st to exercise our First Amendment right to express our grievances and ask our government to fix the wrongs that are hurting the lives of the majority of Americans.
