Officially, Earth Day is April 22nd and Arbor Day is April 24th, but since the Earth is our Mother, on whom we depend for our Life, we must protect and support her every day. And Trees are our lungs, providing oxygen, our shelter from heat, and primary support for soil biology, so we need to plant them and continue to care for them. Progress may be slow, but humans are evolving to see individual trees and individual people as partners in communities.
The prevalence of the word “eco” in our products and language demonstrates that we are becoming aware of the importance of relationships, especially to our “home” the Earth. Individual survival is no longer logical. War and pesticides are outdated and ineffective strategies.
A major shift in Earth-thinking started in the United States on April 22, 1970—the first Earth Day. Twenty million Americans (10% of the population at the time) showed up in the streets, in parks and schools to protest our toxic dumps, polluting factories, dying wildlife and health problems caused by environmental toxins. This was a bipartisan effort and our government recognized these demonstrations of environmental concerns and created the EPA, the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act.
In just one year, 56 years of progress has been violently undermined by a president and administration with a very short-sighted view of what is good for America. It is time for an Earth Day Revival. If WE THE PEOPLE can rally10% of our current population (34 million), calling for a revival of Earth conscious awareness and eco-logical justice, the United States might once again become a leader for healing the planet. A healthy environment is a strong social benefit for all; let’s start now to make 2028’s Earth Day 34 million voices strong.
On May Day (Friday, May 1st ) we will interrupt our business to join in the General Strike: No Work, No School, No Shopping.
