Retail Store & Office Lead
Start date: February 2026
General Responsibilities: In collaboration with other department leads, this position is responsible for the successful operation of the nursery’s retail store and office. This includes: all aspects of customer service, retail product ordering, product display, inventory, and sales tracking. Maintain quality control and overall retail store cleanliness/upkeep. Participate and collaborate in department lead meetings. Oversee Memberships, Classes, and annual Holiday Market.
The successful candidate will have prior retail and customer service leadership experience and be enthusiastically participate in Harlequin’s Democratic and Participative Leadership process, which emphasizes collaboration and employee involvement in decision-making. Nursery experience and strong knowledge of sustainable gardening in the Intermountain West preferred. Proficiency with computers and willingness to learn common office programs. Ability to lead with a ‘can-do’ attitude, detail-oriented, and a desire to engage with the public. Ability to lift and move product (ie, soil amendments, plants) weighing up to 40 pounds (with reasonable accommodation) and to occasionally pull wheeled trolleys of up to 100 pounds.
Reports to: Nursery Operations Lead. Please note that Harlequin’s has a flat hierarchy and all Department Leads share organizational leadership.
Compensation: Salary Range: 18.50 – 21.00/hr. Harlequin’s offers profit-sharing when possible, paid days off per year + state mandated sick time on an accrual basis, 40% off plants and 30% off other merchandise, ongoing educational opportunities, and more.
Hours/Days of work: This is an on-site, 9a-5p, 5-days a week (Wed-Sun), year-round position. Potential to fluctuate on weekends – at least one weekend day is required.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Guiding and keeping part-time retail personnel informed to ensure workflow consistency.
- Preparation, counting, and balancing cash registers every morning and evening.
- All retail store sales including deliveries, visual merchandising, and signage – in collaboration with Department Leads and following sales plan protocols.
- Inspection of retail store, at least once a day, for pests, correct signage, clear walkways, cleanliness of restroom and all public areas.
- Organization of all materials and products for the retail store and office department.
- Pricing and inventory of all retail store merchandise, entering and updating bar codes, sale prices and dates, purchase orders, receivables, etc., into the Square POS system.
- Handling and resolving any customer concerns or complaints, managing phones/voicemail and emails daily, and keep all electronic and hard-copy filing clean and available.
- Coordinate with marketing/communication lead for weekly e-newsletter preparation, scheduling of advertising, special events, sales and promotions – including tracking memberships, classes, and public events.
- Customer program execution including Membership, Classes, Holiday Gift Market, Spring and Fall Sales, in collaboration with Department Leads.
- Helping seasonal staff as needed on cash register, phone etiquette, customer relations, plant identification, care and maintenance in collaboration with Department Leads.
