Yes, I know. Here we are, talking about roses and about how to control the Japanese beetles that love them, in the same newsletter. Well, fragrant heirloom roses are worth it! And we currently have stock of some of the most sought-after varieties. Cases in point include Zephirine Drouhin, an heirloom climbing Bourbon rose with completely thornless canes and elegantly scrolled, very fragrant medium pink blossoms that repeat-bloom. Zephirine is perfect for growing on an arched entry trellis, especially where she gets afternoon shade, topping out at 6 to 7 feet tall.
Then there’s heirloom Rose de Rescht, purportedly from Ispahan, Iran, and known as one of the very most fragrant roses

ever. The bush blooms first on old wood, then again on new canes. The 2-3” flowers are packed with deep magenta-purple petals and unforgettable fragrance. She grows in a compact shrubby form, without any floppy, arching branches, to anywhere from 3 to 5 feet tall and wide.
