May 4 – May 12: May Day Celebration and Sales!
There is something special and exciting about the arrival of May. In May, Spring weather may still be variable, but there’s nothing tentative about the progress of growth and flowering. They are unstoppable, full speed ahead!
At Harlequin’s Gardens, we love to celebrate May Day. This ancient festival from the British Isles welcomes Spring and celebrates the beauty, fertility, and abundance of the Earth. For 30 years, Harlequin’s Gardens has maintained a tradition of starting off our May Day festivities with hosting the Maroon Bells Morris Dancers, performing their lively traditional dances with bells, music, knocking sticks and waving scarves to bring forth the Earth’s fertility. The magic seems to work!
Growing Mushrooms on Logs and Stumps
with Zach Hedstrom
Sunday, May 16th from 10-11am
Cultivating mushrooms on logs is an ancient cultivation method, dating back as the earliest recorded way to grow mushrooms. Log cultivation is fascinating and easy but requires patience and attention to detail. Growing on logs is one of the closest methods to the way mushrooms grow in nature, so one must apply some basic knowledge of ecology and natural systems to be successful. Mushroom logs are beautiful, mysterious, and can be integrated into any myco-inspired landscape with some proper planning. With sufficient care, mushroom logs can fruit for up to 6 years or more! In this 1-hour online seminar, we will discuss: 1) An introduction to wood decomposing fungi 2) How to choose the right logs/stumps for growing mushrooms 3) complete methods for successfully growing mushrooms from logs/stumps 4) How to care for your logs/stumps and when to harvest mushrooms from them. Taught by mycology enthusiast Zach Hedstrom.
