May Day 2024 Celebration!

April 26, 2022

Our Annual May Day Festivities and Spring Sale begin May 4th!

At Harlequin’s Gardens, we love to celebrate May Day. It is an ancient festival welcoming Spring and celebrating the beauty, fertility, and abundance of the earth.

Mikl remembers May Day growing up in a little town in Iowa where people celebrated May Basket Day, making little baskets out of construction paper, and filling them with candies, wildflowers and sometimes a note. These were taken to the homes of friends, neighbors or loved ones, set by the door, then the giver rang the doorbell and ran, so the giver would not be known.

Starting in England in the fifteenth century, and now in the US, it was traditional on May Day for Morris Dancers to perform their ancient dances to bring forth the Earth’s fertility.  And it has been a Harlequin’s tradition to host the Maroon Bells Morris Dancers for their lively dancing with bells, music, knocking sticks and waving scarves. It has become a tradition for Mikl to sing English Country Garden along with one of the Morris Dances.

It is also a Harlequin tradition to host superb, local,  live music because live music awakens us to the present moment, because it’s fun and because it is such a treat to be in the presence of artistic talent!
